SIHK 9 Sam’s Soldiers 10 (or 9 or 11)

Number 10 on February 17, 2008 | 1 Comment

SiHKFC returned to our bogie-pitch, the carpet at Happy Valley for our fifth match against the Samless Soldiers.

It proved to be an event-filled match. Indeed, so much took place that nobody could agree the final score.

In usual shambolic fashion, SiHK just about managed to get enough players on the field in time for kickoff, and went through a rigorous warm-up routine of taking pot-shots at the goal (and usually missing). Yet there was cause for optimism. With Craig and James returning to action after a 2 month hiatus, there were surely goals to be scored.

The Lane, The Pride and The Flag

Oz Spur on February 16, 2008 | 1 Comment

Arrived at Heathrow at 5.30am only to discover that my son’s flight from Oslo had been cancelled because of heavy snow. Fortunately the Norwegians are pretty efficient and by 9am the airport had reopened and my son was on his way. Only problem was whether he would make it to the Lane in time. By midday I was outside the Bricklayers to meet the first of my ticket contacts. The saga of my tickets is a long one but it all worked out well……………..eventually. I must admit that by the end of it all, I felt like some shady character wheeling and dealing (bit like my brother in real life really). Once I had secured the 2nd Man U ticket and the first Derby one, I was able to relax a bit and downed a few pints at The Bricklayers. At 2.00pm my son arrived (yeah), followed shortly after my my nephew. The Bricklayers had well and truly warmed up with several rousing versions of the Adebayor song. Then it was off down the high street for yet another ticket dealing rendezvous and then we were set.

Juande Ramos

I think we can safely say that the honeymoon is well and truly over. King Ramos is no longer an incongruous, swarthy figure sitting in seat where our lovable Dutch mate used to sit. It’s no longer a momentary jolt to see Ramos, Gus and the other one egging on the team from the sidelines and it has to be admitted that there have been very encouraging signs in terms of performances. Wham away we would have lost under Jol but Ramos had us fighting back those mockney dogs and we should have gone on and won the game if Defoe knew how to take a penalty. The following game, Aalborg at home, Ramos displayed his tactical nouce and dragged Spurs kicking and screaming to a victory when all seemed lost at half time. Skipping past the Birmingham result (sunk by another wonder goal) we trashed a previously undefeated at Eastlands Man Citeh and then pulled of a stunning result and performance against Portsmouth away. It’s only now things have tailed off but we were always going to lose to the vermin (or any other ‘top four’ team) and anyway, we had the destruction of Fulham to ease the pain.

SIHK FC’s New Football Kit

Craig on December 23, 2007 | 2 Comments

After some great work by Edman we received our new football shirts just over a week ago. You might of already seen them in the Xmas Party photos or you might own your own but for those who haven’t here’s a few photos.

Apparently the shirt goes surprisingly well with Benny Cat’s pants, although I have yet to witness this wonderous sight. We’ll be having our next game around mid January so we could well be in for a treat!

SIHK End of Year Awards 2007

Craig on December 21, 2007 | 4 Comments

Before last Saturday’s Xmas Party, SIHK had our first and definitely not last End of Year Awards Ceremony at Al’s Diner in LKF. The nominations were out and the votes were in courtesy of some excellent work by Danny Boy and James. Personally I wasn’t in attendance so I’ll let the photos and the results do the talking!

SIHK 2 Sam’s Soldiers 3

‘Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…..’. It’s strange how much the goings ons’ at our beloved Spurs is mirrored by the going ons with our very own team in HK. Upper tier Management confused and in dissaray? Check. Porous back four with injury and waistline problems? Check. Skillful attackers not yet firing on all four cylinders? Check. Fancy dan midfield full of flicks and tricks, yet not really providing the cutting edge we need? Check. Some players spending too much time in the showers, soaping and lathering each other whilst staring into each others eyes until it gets too much for them and both burst into tears? Check and check again. After match refuelinng of the body problems? Check.

SIHK 2 Sam’s Soldiers 2

SIHK FC team photoWhen you strip football of its post-Sky razzmatazz, it’s still a simple game. A simple game which rewards simple passing and the occasional bit of a ingenuity. A cliche, I know. (Not a Gay Cliche as David Pleat refers to a certain full-back down the road.)

So SiHKFC really need to take a long hard look at themselves, because there was some odd on-ball decision-making during the course of this match. It ended 2-2 when really we should have been coasting. We’d taken the lead through BennyLee and a long-ranger from Craig. Bish, bosh. Should’ve been good night Judas (a.k.a. Defector Sam) and his Soldiers. Movement was scarce though. The simple act of passing it out from the back seemed physically impossible. Was it the evening heat? The glare of the lights? The dazzling showcase of impeccably-ironed kits that Edman had paraded before kick-off?
