Back in mid 2006, Tottenham ST holder Ezza landed in Hong Kong. Desperate and needing a fix of Tottenham he searched on Google, looking for local Spurs but to no avail. Posting on Geo Expat and other sites led to nothing. Meanwhile a handsome young man, Daniel, was in London about to head off to the Big Lychee. One day Daniel saw a post on a forum from Ezza pleading for some HK yids. Beaming like an SOS beacon on a stormy night, Daniel replied and the bond was made. On arrival in Honkers, Ezza and Daniel met and watched their first game, Villa away, in the corner of Delaneys. Cowering in the semi darkness they believed that there must be other likeminded individuals out there with the decency to support Spurs, but where were they?
For the next game Ezza and Daniel stumbled into Skitz bar. It was here that they met HK and Spurs veteran, Sean. Battle weary and drained, he looked crestfallen as he explained how the local Spurs were a mishmash of expats and locals, dotted around HK with no real focus. Unable to fathom the reasons for this situation the holy trinity, Daniel, Ezza and Sean decided to do something about it. The idea was simple; Ezza and Daniel would sort out the publicity for this new group and Sean would lay on the booze, grub and food. Spurs in Hong Kong was born. A basic message board was set up and a few people posted, but only a couple turned up for the first match; Jason and Jeff. Two became five, then Chris and Spanish Jason joined us for the Arsenal away game. We were drained and emotional, but for the first time it felt like we were a group bonded by the mid-season slump Spurs were going through at the time. We would meet on Saturday or Sunday nights at midnight and for one Uefa game, and then some SC chaps rolled up for the Chelsea game early this year. We said hello to Aaron, Ian and Danny Boy and lo, we hit double figures. Spurs in Hong Kong was now a regular fixture for Hong Kong’s Tottenham supporters.
Just as things were getting good there was terrible news from darkest Wanchai. It turned out that our home, our WHL in HK, was to be no more. Skitz closed. Shut down. The end. Sent into chaos the group thought quickly and relocated to McSorley’s and it was there, for the Scum draw at home, that the greatest night so far was had. Not only did we pack the entire top floor but none other than Martin Jol’s nephew decided to join us. I believe in religious terms it is called an epiphany. We now had a holy blessing. Onwards and upwards and the group decided, en masse, to go to the HK Soccer 7’s tournament as Spurs were sending a squad for the first time, and it was there that another era-defining moment was to unfold. The three disparate groups (the locals, the expats and SiHK) met for the first time. Details were exchanged and there then began the task of unifying all three under the banner of Spurs Supporters in Hong Kong.
People started meeting for midweek drinks and a footie match was arranged between SpursinHongKong and the local Spurs. HK lads that brought together over thirty Spurs-mad fans. From that humble beginning, SiHK now has a 7-a-side team of our own playing regular friendly matches, normally on Saturday nights and invariably followed by plentiful beer and song. All are welcome and any age and talent level is accepted, the only selection criteria is that you are a Spurs fan - you can play five minutes or 90 minutes, just come and join in the fun.
And so here we are, all the hatchets have been buried and a new dawn has begun in the life of Spurs supporters in Hong Kong. Keeping with our original mantra, ALL ARE WELCOME, so please introduce yourself and come on down…
