Reasons To Be Cheerful

It is tricky to decide where to begin when reflecting upon Tottenham’s season. Should the emphasis be upon the first trophy in 9 years and European qualification, or the mid-table finish and lethargic end to the season?

Football is a tumultuous game and football fans can sometimes have short term memories. The recent run of results for the last 2 months have been disappointing. Not exactly poor, but flaccid, inconsistent, disinterested. A string of 1-1 draws against Middlesboro, Blackburn, Wigan and Bolton epitomised this mediocrity. The heavy defeat at Birmingham may have been put down to overblown Wembley celebrations taking their toll, but the second-half mauling at home to Newcastle was inexplicable and surely unacceptable in all Lilywhite eyes. Wins over Portsmouth, Reading and West Ham, and a thrilling 4-4 draw with Chelsea complete a run since lifting the League Cup of Won: 3, Drawn: 5 and Lost: 3. Not good, but certainly not terrible.

Tomorrow we will play ‘Parents Team’ at Kwong Fuk Football Ground in Tai Po.

On Easter Monday, 24th March, we will play in a three team Invitational Cup at Sham Shui Po Sports Ground. We will be facing Bear Foot FC and Gebo Tooo FC. Hopefully a win here can make us all feel a little better following Thursday’s penalty drama.

Then the following Sunday, 30th March, we will be back in the familiar surroundings of Happy Valley. Our opponent is unknown but will be confirmed asap.

No date for the Ar5ena1 Supports Club game so keep your eye on the forums.

SIHK v Chelsea Supporters Club

Enter the Pitbull on March 10, 2008 | 5 Comments

If the Carling Cup Final was the way Juande Ramos announced to the world that a new era of Spurs dominance had begun, then the match between SIHK and Chelsea Supporters Club (CSC) may well be the watershed performance that we have been waiting for here in HK. Pre-match intelligence had us down as the underdogs, pitted against the considerable manpower and might of the CSC forces. Edman spoke highly of their quicksilver wingers; rumours spread as to their pre-match tryout which saw them pick from a squad of 30. With SIHK missing several regulars, an uphill battle lay ahead.

SIHK Victorious Again!

Word on the street is that the mighty SIHK beat the Chelsea Supporters last night. I personally wasn’t there so can’t shed any light on how good the performance was or how good the goals were but from reading the forums it sounds like one of the best yet with an end result of 3-1. COYSIHK!

SIHK 8 Sam’s Soldiers 2

Danny Boy on March 4, 2008 | Comment?

It could be said that the longer you wait, the more you enjoy sweet, sweet victory when it (finally) comes. And yet, like reluctant and tardy London Buses, triumph came in twos in the final weekend of February. It came with double helpings of magnificence, a side salad of elation and a delightful dessert of deep satisfaction. For, not only did Spurs finally win something, but SIHK claimed their most successful result in their short, but nonetheless event-filled, history.

SIHK 9 Sam’s Soldiers 10 (or 9 or 11)

Number 10 on February 17, 2008 | 1 Comment

SiHKFC returned to our bogie-pitch, the carpet at Happy Valley for our fifth match against the Samless Soldiers.

It proved to be an event-filled match. Indeed, so much took place that nobody could agree the final score.

In usual shambolic fashion, SiHK just about managed to get enough players on the field in time for kickoff, and went through a rigorous warm-up routine of taking pot-shots at the goal (and usually missing). Yet there was cause for optimism. With Craig and James returning to action after a 2 month hiatus, there were surely goals to be scored.

The Lane, The Pride and The Flag

Arrived at Heathrow at 5.30am only to discover that my son’s flight from Oslo had been cancelled because of heavy snow. Fortunately the Norwegians are pretty efficient and by 9am the airport had reopened and my son was on his way. Only problem was whether he would make it to the Lane in time. By midday I was outside the Bricklayers to meet the first of my ticket contacts. The saga of my tickets is a long one but it all worked out well……………..eventually. I must admit that by the end of it all, I felt like some shady character wheeling and dealing (bit like my brother in real life really). Once I had secured the 2nd Man U ticket and the first Derby one, I was able to relax a bit and downed a few pints at The Bricklayers. At 2.00pm my son arrived (yeah), followed shortly after my my nephew. The Bricklayers had well and truly warmed up with several rousing versions of the Adebayor song. Then it was off down the high street for yet another ticket dealing rendezvous and then we were set.
